The McMahon family is a prominent Irish-American family, known for their involvement in the fields of professional wrestling, business, and politics. They are best known as the founders, owners, and promoters of the world's most prominent professional wrestling company, WWE. The company's primary business is professional wrestling, but it has expanded into a subscription based network, home video production, movie production company, and an E-commerce company.

History

The dynasty began when Jess McMahon, who was descended from the McMahon family of Western Ireland, began promoting wrestling shows in 1915. He, along with Toots Mondt formed the Capitol Wrestling Corporation in 1953. When he died in 1954, his son, Vincent J. McMahon, took over the business, which would subsequently be renamed twice during his tenure (as the World Wide Wrestling Federation, and then the World Wrestling Federation). Vince Sr. had two wives, Victoria (Vickie) and Juanita, with Vickie still living today. When he retired in 1982, his son from his first marriage, Vince McMahon, purchased the business and currently serves as chairman and chief executive officer of the company, now known as World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) since 2002.

Vince and Linda's children are Shane and Stephanie. Shane is married to Marissa Mazzola, and Stephanie is married to Paul Levesque, better known by his wrestling moniker Triple H. Stephanie and Paul have three daughters named Aurora Rose, Murphy Claire, and Vaughn Evelyn. Shane and Marissa have three sons, Declan James, Kenyon Jesse, and Rogan Henry. Linda would step down as CEO to run for United States Senate in Connecticut. Their son, Shane also eventually departed WWE at the beginning of 2010 to become Chairman and Principal executive officer of You on Demand Inc, a New York City based company with its primary business in China, but he would return to WWE in 2016 as an on screen talent. Vince, Stephanie, and Shane are the only three members born into the McMahon family working under the brand as of 2016, although every member holds a collective 90% of WWE stock through WWE's Class B shares, which the family controls completely. As of June 2016, the WWE has a USD market cap of over $1.38 billion.

In December 2016, Linda was nominated to be the Administrator of the Small Business Administration by President Donald Trump, and took office in 2017, following Senate confirmation.

Wrestling as a family

The McMahons

In 2015, Vince McMahon returned on the December 14, 2015 episode of Raw as a heel, aligning himself with The Authority, and making himself the new leader due to Triple H being injured.

Feud between the family (2016)

On the February 22, 2016 episode of Raw, as Vince McMahon was awarding Stephanie the "Vincent J. McMahon Legacy of Excellence Award", Shane returned to WWE television for the first time in over six years. This led to the booking of Shane vs. The Undertaker at WrestleMania 32 in a Hell in a Cell match with the added stipulation that if Shane were to win, then he would have full control of Raw, but if Undertaker were to lose, he would no longer compete at WrestleMania. Leading up to the event, Vince announced that he had disowned Shane as his son and that Stephanie would get everything in his will. At WrestleMania, Shane lost the match to The Undertaker, failing to get control of Raw. The following night on Raw, as Shane was saying his goodbyes, Vince decided to give Shane control of the show for the night. Under Shane's control the main roster debuts of NXT talents Enzo Amore, Colin Cassady, Apollo Crews and Baron Corbin occurred, and international star AJ Styles became the newest contender for Roman Reigns' WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Shane McMahon was given overwhelming fan support when he took over Raw. It was later announced that at Payback, Vince McMahon would choose who would run Raw on a regular basis, at the event McMahon picked both his daughter Stephanie and his son Shane to run the show.

Resolution and second brand extension (2016-present)

After both Stephanie and Shane started running Raw, Stephanie would gradual begin to cooperate with her brother and began to turn face. This ended the (kayfabe) infighting in the McMahon family and the Stephanie/Shane feud. On May 25, 2016, it was announced that starting July 19, SmackDown would start airing live on Tuesday nights and a draft would be held to give the shows their distinct rosters, it was then rumored that Stephanie and Shane will no longer co-run Raw but will rather run a show apiece.

On the July 11 episode of Raw, it was announced that Shane would be the Commissioner of SmackDown and Stephanie would serve as the Commissioner of Raw.
