Controversies
The Douglas County School District is a central feature of the documentary Education Inc., which includes information on the pro-charter school and pro-voucher school board majority was elected in 2009. As a consequence, teacher exodus increased from 10.2 percent to 16.7 percent in the 2014-15 school year. In the 2013-14 school year, it had been as high as 17.3 percent. The new school board also launched a voucher program that allowed funds be used to send children to private schools, including religious ones. The school board's school choice philosophy resulted in protests by some parents and students.
In 2015, the Colorado Supreme Court struck down Douglas County's school voucher program as violating the state constitution, which prohibits public funds to support parochial schools as a choice option for parents.
